What's on in Cockermouth? Unforgettable family adventures

With half term and the promise of spring just around the corner, it's time to shake off those winter blues and enjoy great days out at your local venue.

Written by Dani Boniface

Hello half term. So long mad morning rush. Missing your alarm, scrapping for the bathroom, cereal bowls piled high, toothpaste on jumpers, juggling PE kits, coats, laces and teddy that simply HAS to come for show and tell today. Sigh. Oh and whooooops, we forgot your reading book... again. #thankgoodnessforcoffee.

That's right. School's almost out and if you've managed to book some time off work or relax (just a bit) in your busy role as full time parent - also known as full time master of everything ever - then half term is a time for you and your family.

But what to do to keep the kids (and you) sane? There's only so much reading, baking, tv'ing, I Spy'ing, Guess Who'ing and Mr Jump'ing you can do. And given that the rain in Cumbria can be pretty relentless, even the bikes, the park and the hills are sometimes off limits.

So... what to do? Don't fret, we've got you covered.

The last time I took the kids to one of the mainstream cinemas (cough cough VUE), we shelled out nearly £50 on tickets, transport, snacks and spent the entire time sat with our kness under our chins. That combined with 30 minutes of trailers and adverts was NOT our idea of fun.

At the Kirkgate we do things differently. Tickets aren't extortionate, we show you the film minus 30 minutes of advertising, there's ice creams for the little ones that aren't a fiver a pop and you can enjoy the film on our new, comfy, non squeaky seats (leg room included). Best of all, we're right on your doorstep.

So now that you're sitting comfortably, let's take a look at our half term film here in Cockermouth:

Paddington 2 (PG) - Friday 16 February 6pm

The nation's favourite bear and his infamous marmalade sandwiches return. Paddington turns detective in this second cinematic interpretation of the beloved children’s books. Filled with charm, laughs, mischief and adventure, it's no wonder Paddington 2 has become the best-reviewed movie ever on Rotten Tomatoes. Book now and get ready for non-stop fun in Windsor Gardens and beyond!

Family theatre at the Kirkgate is about losing yourself in the moment and great memories. No need to be a theatre connoisseur here, only fun is required. To share the arts with young people and families is a pleasure and lies at the heart of what we do. The team here work incredibly hard to bring you top quality, gut-bustingly funny, interactive theatre that will leave the biggest smile on your faces. Our February line up is no exception...

The Sagas Of Noggin The Nog - Saturday 24 February 7.30pm

Third Party Productions transport us back in time to the Lands of the North where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea. In the dark night that is very long, the Men of the Northlands sit around their great log fires and they tell a tale... of Noggin the Nog!

These adventurous stories created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin are playfully retold in this new piece of theatre for children, families and Noggin fans. For those of you that remember the cult classic BBC One series from the golden age of British children's television, The Sagas of Noggin The Nog is sure to delight and reignite your imagination.

No school holiday would be complete without a creative workshop. So roll up your sleeves, don your artist hat (any will do, including the mixing bowl) and hop on down to the Kirkgate to get creative!

Draw Like A Viking - Thursday 15 February 11am - 3pm

To celebrate the arrival of Noggin The Nog here at the Kirkgate, we're hosting our first ever Draw Like A Viking Workshop! Create your own Viking style pictures, inspired by the age of the fearsome raiders. No need to register, just turn up on the day and get ready to learn new skills as we journey back in time! And best of all it's completely FREE!
