Kick-start 2018 in Cumbria, with an inspiring new season from Kirkgate Arts

Happy New Year! We hope you’ve all had a happy and peaceful festive break. 2017 was a great year for Kirkgate Arts that saw the launch of our new website, the arrival of live streams on the big Kirkgate screen and we had the pleasure of welcoming the great Alun Armstrong to Cockermouth.

There were fundraisers, workshops, endless entertainment and heart-warming community spirit. So now that the festive season is over, don’t despair. There’s plenty to raise your spirits and look forward to…

We start the New Year in super style with Justice League (8 Jan) from the DC universe. Join Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash as they fight to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. The cinema treats continue with a compelling romance, based on Peter Turner's memoir: Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool (15 Jan) starring Jamie Bell and the eccentric Academy Award-winning Annette Bening. Armando Iannucci brings us his audacious comedy The Death Of Stalin (22 Jan) followed by the inspiring real life story of Jeff Bauman in Stronger (29 Jan) starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

January also sees the return of the now legendary Great Kirkgate Quiz (12 Jan). Go head to head on general knowledge, interactive rounds, film clips and music intros to establish your team as the unbeatable Kirkgate Quiz champs, whilst raising vital funds to support the organisation. Our theatre season begins with the much-loved winter panto from Cockermouth Amateur Dramatic Society with Aladdin (20, 26 and 27 Jan) - great fun for all the family. And we have the first live stream of 2018 in Verdi’s infamous Rigoletto (21 Jan) from the Royal Opera House.

February is jam-packed with entertainment for all. Highlights include live shows at the Kirkgate and Arts Out West venues from The Dime Notes (2, 3 and 4 Feb) who dig back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz. There’s more theatre magic from young local group Wyldwood with Throne (17 and 18 Feb) and mesmerising live streams with Tosca (7 Feb) from the ROH and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (22 Feb) from NT Live. Half term sees the return of the nation’s favourite bear from Peru and his marmalade sandwiches in Paddington 2 (16 Feb) followed by a delightful family show featuring silly Vikings, live music, puppets and projections in The Sagas Of Noggin The Nog (24 Feb).

The food theme continues with The Chef Show* (10 and 24 Mar). For music lovers, Kit Holmes* (10 Mar) is back due to popular demand. Kit’s trademark sultry vocals and virtuoso guitar playing have wowed audiences across the UK.

*All three shows are brought to you live from Arts Out West.

On the big screen see one of the most famous operas in the world from the ROH in Carmen (11 Mar) followed by the next unmissable instalment of the Skywalker saga in Star Wars: The Last Jedi 12A (16 Mar).

There’s school holiday fun with an unforgettable cast of hilarious new characters in Early Man (6 Apr), Nick Park’s first feature film since his Academy Award winning Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit. For a charming live theatre experience, we join nature lovers Wilma and William on an underground journey to discover a family of friendly, musical worms and their colourful miniature world in The Worm (14 Mar) - perfect for little ones and their grown-ups. And for teens, it’s “final call, pitches” as The Bellas are back for the last time in Pitch Perfect 3 (20 Apr).
