Hugh Jackman stars in The Greatest Showman, screening at the Kirkgate Centre

An original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum, a man with big dreams and even bigger ambitions, who figured that showmanship could be his way out of poverty and might provide hope for his wife and kids. He went on to gather a variety of performers and those who some labelled freaks, and staged a circus that drew applause from some, and the ire of others.

The film charts Barnum’s life from a poor upbringing to his first proper circus in New York in the 1800s, a time when such shows were frowned upon as morally dubious.

With songs from Oscar-winning La La Land lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the film also stars Zac Ephron as Barnum’s business partner – initially sceptical about the ‘show’ part of the enterprise.
