The Shape Of Water screening at the Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth

From master story teller Guillermo del Toro comes an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. The subject is a humanoid creature captured from a South American river.

Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Del Toro has said "This movie is a healing movie for me... For nine movies I rephrased the fears of my childhood, the dreams of my childhood, and this is the first time I speak as an adult, about something that worries me as an adult. I speak about trust, otherness, sex, love, where we’re going.” (interview for IndieWire)

“Stylish and charming; red meat for the senses with some sugar on top” - The Guardian
