3 reasons why you should join us this summer...

Written by Dani Boniface

For those of you yet to discover one of Cockermouth's true gems or for those of you that simply haven't swung by to see us for a while, here are 3 reasons why you really (really) should join us over the next season:

1. A REAL TREAT - We host top quality, award-winning shows from across the UK and beyond. Not bad for a small arts venue in rural Cumbria...

Take June for example #talentoverload: We kick off with the North East's legendary musician and songwriter Martin Stephenson. The man with an extraordinary catalogue of 40 albums under his belt from 35 years in the industry (who also rocks a hat like no other). Imelda Staunton then smoulders in NT Live's revival of Edward Albee’s landmark play Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, broadcast from the Harold Pinter Theatre in London. And that only takes us to the 3rd day of the month. Crikey.

2. FUN FOR ALL - Our shows, events and community groups are suited to all ages and tastes. You're sure to discover something you love.

Love film? Where do we start? The summer season features the likes of Disney's live action re-telling of the tale as old as time Beauty and the Beast (PG) (oh Emma, how we love you), The Lost City of Z (15) based on author David Grann's bestseller and I Am Not Your Negro (12A), with a whopping 99% Rotten Tomatoes score. This incendiary new documentary from master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. It's an incredible journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. (Go on, lose yourself in the full cinema line up here).

3. BEST OF LOCAL - We're huge supporters of local businesses and creativity. We have an exciting selection of locally created shows, fundraisers, collaborations and more in store for you...

Now in its seventh year, local fashion favourite Cockfrock returns, raising funds to support our events and activities for the community. The second instalment of Cumbrian soap opera/comedy/drama Beyond The Boards from Arts Out West arrives at Brigham and later Cockermouth School Choir and Band join us with their varied and exuberant repertoire.

Still not convinced?

We've barely scratched the surface here. The new season is bursting with entertainment. There's also the chance to get creative at our youth groups, delve into local history with our heritage group or go behind the scenes and get involved as a volunteer.

So why not take a look our newsletter and discover something new this summer? If you haven't already, it's quick and easy to sign up here.
