Cockermouth Heritage Group
The Cockermouth Heritage Group is part of Kirkgate Arts, based at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth. We research and record all aspects of Cockermouth’s history, and that of the surrounding area. We collect (or copy) old photographs, as well as artefacts of all kinds that were made, used or owned in our area. We now have a considerable collection of items, which are used in regular exhibitions at the Kirkgate Centre, or to answer local and family history queries.
We were about to mount an exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth‘s birth in Cockermouth when the Coronavirus struck.
Instead, we have created an online version you can see here.
The group was set up in 1992, with the original purpose of establishing a museum dedicated to Cockermouth’s history within the former old All Saints’ School (now the Kirkgate Centre). That aim has not yet been realised, due to financial constraints and lack of premises, but the Heritage Group continues to raise the profile of Cockermouth’s rich history wherever it can.
We usually meet on the first Monday of every month at the Kirkgate Centre between 7.45 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., when we work on maintaining/recording our collection, and discuss any issues/queries relating to local or family history.
Family/Local History Research
Whilst we are unable to offer a family history research service, we are happy to help with individual family history queries, and can offer a look-up service in directories and limited family files that we hold. Similarly, we are happy to answer local history queries. You can send us an enquiry via our website here, alternatively you can email us directly – firstname.lastname@example.org. See also the Resources section for available resources.
