Amazing Grace  (U)

Brilliantly capturing a remarkable performer near the peak of her prodigious power, this thrilling documentary was finally completed after a wait of more than 40 years, after being left unfinished by Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack due to technical difficulties.

It is made up of concert footage from 1972 of Aretha Franklin performing songs from the best-selling gospel album at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

James Cleveland appears as a featured singer and a piano accompanist. Franklin is also accompanied by Bernard Purdie on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass guitar.

The audience included Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts, in LA working on Exile on Mainstreet.

This is a film that revels in a titanic talent, and the details that an audio recording can never pick up“ The Times

I felt wrung out at the end of this film. How incredible must it have been for those who were there in person“ The Guardian
