Songwriters Workshop Week
HOW TO RELEASE YOUR CREATIVE GENIUS
CHARLIE DORE Leads 5 days of workshops for emerging songwriters
We are inviting emerging songwriters to attend a week of intensive tuition and development at The Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth, led by one of the UK’s most respected songwriters Charlie Dore. You will experience a variety of skills workshops to help you hone your craft, meet other like-minded songwriters and get the opportunity to write and record demos.
The week will also include sessions with expert guest tutors:
Leading Film and TV composer Kevin Sargent, a BAFTA and Ivor-Novello Award nominee, who has scored many highly successful series including The Hour, Ordinary Lies and The Wrong Mans as well as countless advertising campaigns including Adidas, Guinness and Patek Phillippe.
Legal guru Jens Hills, a respected expert in copyright, publishing, management and artist & label development who has handled many signifcant music industry cases including Oasis, Sex Pistols, XTC, Motorhead, the Verve and Puff Daddy and was the external legal adviser to the MU for nearly a decade.
Voice, music and performance coach, Judith Jones. Member of AOTOS, ISM and the British Voice Association. Judith works with the whole person to develop their own style and bring out their unique voice. She focuses on Accent Method, Breathing, posture and alignment and vocal health.
The week commences Monday 25 February and finishes with a final evening public performance in the Kirkgate Theatre on Friday 1 March 2019.
Charlie’s songs have won two Ascap awards, an Ivor Novello nomination, both the Overall Grand and the Folk Prize from the International Acoustic Music Awards and Album of the Year from the US Indie Acoustic Project. While her own albums favour her more eclectic/roots leanings, she is one of a handful of UK writers to achieve success across many genres, defined by the range of artists to have recorded her songs, including Tina Turner, George Harrison, Celine Dion, Ricky Ross and Jimmy Nail, notching up along the way a UK No 1, a US No 4 and Top 10 hits across Europe. She has also composed for three BBC drama series and two films. Her own hit, Pilot of the Airwaves is still a worldwide radio favourite.
Charlie Dore has many years of experience as a successful performer, platinum hit songwriter and song-doctor/mentor. Also a seasoned improvisor and co-founder of West End comedy-impro venue The Hurricane Club she’s uniquely placed to combine all these strands to help emerging songwriters develop their skills.
The course is designed for songwriters who want to challenge themselves and are prepared to explore and experiment with different ways of working in a safe, non-judgemental environment. There will be a chance to tap into some of the proven formulas of successful songwriting, unpick the process and look at what really makes a song work. At the other end of the dial, we’ll use improvisational exercises and games to access your most most original ideas, sack your inner critic and allow your best ideas to surface. This is the fun bit!
Charlie says: “Some of our most creative work is actually achieved when we take our hands off the wheel for a while. When you allow yourself to stop trying so hard, a strange thing happens. Your brain carries on without you… There’s a goldmine of unique ideas waiting quietly in your subconscious – and with a little encouragement and an experienced guide they could be working for you to give you a brilliantly clever angle you didn’t even know you had in you.
I don’t promise you’ll end the course having written your first No 1 but confidently predict you’ll know a lot more about where to dig for the the real gold… and along the way, there’ll be many discoveries – and a lot of hilarity. ”
“an amazingly astute, moving, intelligent and connected songwriter…a voice like Kate McGarrigle meets Dory Previn. Wonderful”. Mike Harding
“A gift for melody, brave, poignant, entertaining, original” Guardian ★★★★
‘A songwriter of exceptional talent…what singles Dore out from the rest is her lyrics. One of the UK’s most original talents.’ Rock&Reel
