Present Laughter – NT Live

Andrew Scott (Sherlock, Fleabag) leads Noël Coward’s provocative comedy about stardom, performance and neediness.

As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour, Garry Essendine’s colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. The successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor is engulfed by an escalating identity crisis as his many and various relationships compete for his attention. Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching.

Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry has to deal with women who want to seduce him, placate both his long-suffering secretary and his wife, cope with a crazed young playwright, and overcome his impending mid-life crisis (since he has recently turned forty).

Directed by Matthew Warchus (Laurence Olivier Award – Best Director for Matilda).

‘Andrew Scott’s revelatory performance shows why Noël Coward is hailed a genius’  ★★★★★  Telegraph

‘illuminating and luminously funny’  ★★★★★   WhatsOnStage

‘A treat of a production: a timely depiction of the hollow nature of fame led by a virtuoso yet beautifully nuanced performance’   ★★★★★  Financial Times

‘Andrew Scott shines in glorious, revelatory production… Terrific fun’  ★★★★  Independent

Captured live from The Old Vic in London, Present Laughter is a giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness.
