Trainee Arts Administrator

KIRKGATE ARTS

Kirkgate Arts (KA) is a not-for-profit company and a registered charity, established in 1995, managed by a voluntary board of trustees. It operates both the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth (venue running a lively programme of performing arts, films and live streaming, workshops and exhibitions) and Arts Out West (rural touring scheme for West Cumbria). The organisation is run by a small professional team and largely operated by volunteers.

KA provides wide-ranging opportunities for arts engagement in an area of great natural beauty, but which also faces the challenges of rural isolation, lack of investment, poor transport links, low wages, insecure employment and very limited access to cultural services.

THE OPPORTUNITY

KA is offering a twelve-month full-time trainee post in West Cumbria for someone seeking to develop a career in management and administration of the arts. This post represents an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the operation and programming of a small rural arts centre and in the promotion of a programme of professional performances at community venues.

The person appointed is likely to be educated to graduate level or have equivalent experience. Previous experience of working professionally within the arts is not essential (this may be a first paid job in the arts), but the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a commitment to working in the arts in an organisational and administrative capacity.

A training and development programme will be set up in consultation with the successful candidate. Short secondments and training opportunities may well be included in the programme and regular mentoring with an experienced arts professional from the board of trustees will be integral to the trainee position. On a day-to-day basis, the post will require the ability to learn quickly, engage with a wide range of people and often work without close supervision.

KA has been awarded a Catalyst Arts grant by Arts Council England to develop its fundraising capacity, and this post is financed as part of that project. The trainee post will support two members of staff – the Artistic Director and the Administration & Finance Assistant – enabling them to devote more time to enhancing their fundraising experience and to seek new sources of income.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

This a full-time post (37.5 hours per week) for a fixed term period of 12 months, commencing in May 2018. Working hours will be flexible and will include some evening and weekend commitments. The post is based at the Kirkgate Centre, Cockermouth. The post holder will be expected to be resident in West Cumbria for the duration of the employment.

The salary will be £1,300 per month.
